Blyth takes top prize at last
It was third time lucky for the winner of this year's Roux Diners Club Scholarship. Trevor Blyth finally scooped first prize last week - the third time he has reached the finals in the past five years.
Mr Blyth, 27, was last year's runner-up in the competition for young chefs and this was his last opportunity to win the scholarship, which is organised by Albert and Michel Roux in conjunction with Diners Club.
Mr Blyth, who is currently head chef at Giraud's Restaurant, at Britwell Grange, near Burnham, Buckinghamshire, has won the chance to train for three months at a three-Michelin starred establishment of his choice, plus £1,500.
At present he is undecided as to which establishment he will choose, but he hopes to spend the time in France or Monaco. The Louis XV restaurant in Monte Carlo is one possibility.
On his return from the placement, Mr Blyth intends to find a new job as he had already handed in his notice at Giraud's before the final of the competition.
He said he wanted "somewhere I can do my own thing", at a restaurant that wants to upgrade its food offering and win an industry accolade.
Runner-up in the scholarship competition was Robert Clayton, also a finalist in 1994, from Hunstrete House Hotel, near Chelwood in Avon.
