Probe into pool deaths goes on
CORNISH environmental health officers are continuing their investigation into a swimming pool accident in which two girls died.
Last month Vanessa Jane Grigson, 19, of Liverpool, jumped into the indoor pool at Honicombe Manor Holiday Village near Callington, Cornwall, to rescue seven-year-old Tshan Kamara, also of Liverpool, who had apparently fallen in at the deep end and got into difficulties.
Both stayed underwater for about 10 minutes before being pulled out by staff. They were airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but Grigson was dead on arrival and Kamara later died (Caterer, 27 May, page 8).
A council spokesman said: "We are still sifting through the evidence and it would be wrong to comment further at this stage."
lThe 69-bedroom Pentire Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, where in August 1997 a six-year-old boy drowned, has been sold to Leeds-based Wallace Arnold Hotels.
The hotel went into receivership after the incident. The owner was fined £8,000 plus £2,000 costs by magistrates in March but last month the fine was halved on appeal and costs reduced to £500.
