Missing QE2 chef is named

The chef feared drowned after disappearing from the QE2 in the Atlantic has been named as Prabir Ghoshal.

Ghoshal, 27, from India, had worked as a breakfast chef on the ship since April 1999.

He was a single man and was described as quiet and a non-drinker.

He was last seen asleep in his cabin at 1.30am on Monday 23 July, as the cruise liner sailed towards its home port of Southampton having left New York five days earlier (Caterer, 26 July, page 5).

He failed to report for work later that morning and was not found during a search of the vessel. An air and sea search off the Irish coast also failed to find him.

A spokesman for Cunard, owner of the ship, said Ghoshal had been a "model employee".

He added: "No one really knows what happened to him. He has not been found on board, and a body has not been found at sea."

His family in India have been informed of his disappearance.

Since the QE2 came into service in 1969 half-a-dozen people have fallen overboard. It last happened 10 years ago.
