Rich List contains 60 hospitality millionaires

More than 60 of the richest 1,000 people in Britain have stakes in hotels, restaurants or pubs, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2002.

Sir Terry Matthews, owner of the Celtic Manor resort in Gwent, Wales, continues to top the hospitality table but has dropped from seventh to 24th position. His fortune of £829m was made in electronics.

Brothers Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, who have an interest in London's Ritz hotel, are in 32nd position with £768m.

Leading the hoteliers who make much of their money from hospitality is Radisson Edwardian's Jasminder Singh, whose £400m fortune puts him in 74th place, and Sir Rocco Forte, who holds joint 80th place with £375m.

High risers include JD Wetherspoon's Tim Martin (worth £145m) who climbed 72 places to 224th position.

Nomura's former hotel and pub supremo, Guy Hands, worth £140m, rose 23 places to 230th; and Firoz Kassam, owner of the Firoka hotel group and worth £120m, advanced by 53 places to 272nd.

Most dramatically, Fish! boss Tony Allan (worth £90m) leapfrogged 227 places to number 392.

Hugh Osmond of Punch Pub Company, whose £134m fortune places him 250th in the list, was highest-placed among the new entries. Next came Planet Hollywood founder Robert Earl, in 333rd position with £100m.

Other newcomers were John Marston (676th, £56m) of Kent-based Marston Hotels; Robert Neame (794th, £45m), chairman of pub operator and brewer Shepherd Neame; Surinder Arora (840th, £44m), owner of hotels in Gatwick and Heathrow; and Signature Restaurants' Luke Johnson (874th, £40m).

At joint 962nd position were chef-restaurateurs Albert and Michel Roux (£35m) and Goran Strok, owner of Wren's Hotel Group (also £35m).
