The question I'm moving to Cardiff, but many employers require NVQ level 2 in food preparation, which I don't have. I'll happily train while working, but how do I sell myself to an employer? The answers Your commitment to the industry will count for a great deal, even if you don't fit the job specification exactly. Many employers offer work-based learning programmes where you can gain your NVQs through assessment in the workplace. This means you can learn while working full-time. And, in most cases, your qualification will be funded by the Government. Article continues below
If you contact your local Learning and Skills Council (England), Scottish Enterprise (Scotland) or ELWA (Wales), they will be able to put you in touch with a training provider who can secure you employment with NVQ training. You can find out more about work-based learning at www.hctc.co.uk. Johnny Johnson, communications manager, HCTC First of all, never underestimate the power of enthusiasm. A genuine passion for what you currently do combined with clarity and commitment to what you wish to achieve goes a long way. If you're under 25, you are eligible for the Apprenticeship scheme, which allows you to learn while in full-time employment. Find out more at www.realworkrealpay.com. Approaching an employer with details of such a scheme would illustrate initiative. Another alternative is to join a larger company, such as Whitbread's TGI Friday's, which offers a comprehensive training programme and career path. You may have to start at the bottom, but this type of environment would offer you the chance to sample a variety of roles and acquire new skills. To sell yourself, don't wait for adverts to appear; visit local businesses and speak to the appropriate people. Find out about their business and then tell them about your strengths and what you could do for them. Leave your CV and references with them. Wendy Bartlett, director, Bartlett Mitchell - Each week our expert panel will answer your career questions. If you'd like to submit a question, send it to chris.druce@rbi.co.uk.
