Plumed Horse owner named Scottish Chef of the Year

Tony Borthwick, chef-proprietor of the Plumed Horse in Dumfries & Galloway, is the overall winner of the 9th annual Scottish Chef Awards.

Borthwick, who has run the Michelin-star Plumed Horse in Crossmichael since 1998, picked up his Scottish Chef of the Year award on Sunday (8 May) at a gala dinner at the Radisson hotel, Glasgow.

Glasgow chefs scooped three of the awards, while Edinburgh accounted for another two.

Organiser Brian Hannan said this year's results highlighted the coming-of-age of restaurants in shopping centres (Etain and Harvey Nichol's Forth Floor) and the resurgence of women chefs on the winner's podium (Clare Mansfield and Clare McKie).

The other winners were:

  • Restaurant Chef of the Year: Stuart Muir of Harvey Nichols' Forth Floor restaurant, Edinburgh
  • Hotel Chef of the Year: David Mutter, head chef at the Darroch Learg hotel, Ballater, Aberdeenshire
  • City Chef of the Year: Geoffrey Smeddle of Conran's Etain in Princess Square, Glasgow
  • Rural Chef of the Year: Craig Millar of the Seafood Restaurant in St Monans, Fife
  • New Restaurant of the Year: Clare McKie of Café Royal in Glasgow's West End
  • Casual Dining Award: Andy Mitchell of Stravaigin 2 in Glasgow's West End
  • Gastro Pub of the Year: Clare Mansfield of the Applecross Inn, Wester Ross, Ross-shire, and Craig Grant of the Sorn Inn at Sorn, Ayrshire (joint winners)
  • Gourmet Dinner (over £50): Trevor Brooks of Kinnaird near Dunkeld, Perth & Kinross
  • Gourmet Dinner (under £50): Jean Michel Gauffre of La Garrigue, Edinburgh
