Health concerns hit McDonald's sales

McDonald’s European sales fell by 1.4% in May as the head of operations in the continent, Russ Smyth, quit his post after 20 years.

The fast-food giant has had to battle against tough economic conditions across Europe which remain “challenging” - especially in England and Germany where health concerns have hit sales. 

This situation has widened the gap between Europe and America, where business grew by 4.7%, boosted by the introduction of a blend of stronger coffee.

Smyth has been replaced by Denis Hennequin who will take up the new post of chief operating officer for European operations. 

He underlined his confidence in the current European strategies, where the introduction of a new salad range has seen sales begin to turn around over the last six months.
