Pioneering pub the Havelock is up for sale(07 July 2005 00:00)The Havelock Tavern in London has been put on the market 10 years after blazing the trail for the gastropub concept. Owners Peter Richnell and Jonny Haughton are seeking 2.2m for the pub's freehold through property agent Christie & Co. The sale follows chef Haughton's decision to move to Wimbourne in Dorset for family reasons. They are holding on to their other London pub, the Earl of Spencer in Wandsworth, which their business partners will continue to run. Haughton expects to offload the Havelock within four weeks, but said he is seeking a delayed completion so he is still there when his new cookbook, Cooking without Fuss, is launched in early October. While the 43-year-old chef said there were "very compelling commercial reasons" to open a new gastropub in Dorset, he also admitted that after cooking for 16 years "it is probably time to hang up the apron strings".
