Birmingham seeks total smoking ban

(28 July 2005 00:00)

Birmingham is the latest city to push for a total smoking ban in enclosed public places, after launching a smoke-free coalition on 18 July.

The coalition, which includes the local council, the NHS and local businesses, hopes to take a lead from Ireland's experiences in banning smoking.

London and Liverpool's bids to make all workplaces smoke-free were given a boost when they passed through the House of Lords on 20 July.

They will now be considered by a Lords committee in the autumn and should progress to the Commons early next year, potentially becoming law next summer.

Cambridge is also following suit, with plans being drafted to make it smoke-free within five years.
