Robbie Millar killed in crash

Northern Irish Michelin-starred chef Robbie Millar died in the early hours of last Saturday morning in a car crash near his home in Hollywood, Co Down.

The 38-year-old chef opened Shanks restaurant at the Blackwood golf course in 1994 with his wife Shirley.

One of only three Michelin-starred chefs in Northern Ireland, he was well known for his modern European cuisine using local produce.

Millar won a year's scholarship in Switzerland after leaving catering college in Northern Ireland and subsequently worked in a number of London hotels.

He returned to Belfast in the early 1990s to work for Paul Rankin at his restaurant Roscoff, before he was invited to open Shanks on the Clandeboye Estate.

The funeral was on Tuesday (16 August). Shanks will be closed until further notice.
