Maze is named top newcomer

Jason Atherton's Maze beat off stiff competition, including the Ledbury and Amaya, to be named best new London restaurant at the Time Out Eating & Drinking Awards 2005 last week. The Gordon Ramsay-owned restaurant at the Marriott hotel, Grosvenor Square, was praised for its lively atmosphere and varied and unusual menu.

Other winners included the Shochu Lounge at Roka in Charlotte Street (Best Bar), and the Gun in Docklands (Best Gastropub). Best Design was awarded to Oliver Peyton's Inn the Park restaurant-cum-caf in St James's Park, which was designed by Hopkins Architects with Tom Dixon. Vogue food editor Skye Gyngell's Petersham Nurseries Caf in Richmond won Best Alfresco Dining.

  • Best Alfresco Dining: Petersham Nurseries Café, Petersham, Richmond, Surrey
  • Best Design: Inn the Park, St James's Park, SW1
  • Best New Restaurant: Maze, Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, W1
