Scotland's school meals initiative bears fruit
School meals in Scotland are improving, according to the country's school inspectors.
Nutrition experts who visited 39 schools across the country to monitor the Hungry for Success initiative said children were now benefiting from healthier menus.
"The commitment is making a big difference to what's being served up for lunch," said Graham Donaldson, Scotland's senior chief inspector. But the report warned that more work was needed to ensure that healthy meals were consistently available in all schools.
The programme has seen £63.5m injected into the Scottish school meals system over three years, with a further £70m allocated for the next three years.
South of the border, where the Government has pledged £220m over three years, the Local Authority Caterers Association said improvements would take longer.
