French riots do not seem to have damaged tourism
The recent riots in France have yet to affect travel bookings to the country, according to tourism companies. “We are seeing normal booking conditions,” said a spokesman for German travel firm Tui AG. Despite this, Marc Toutai, an economist with Natexis Banques Popularies, conceded that it was too early to comment.  “There’s nothing to panic about right now, but if things [the riots] continue this way, there’ll definitely be cause for concern,” he said.  The terrorist attacks in London and Madrid earlier in the year appear to have had a larger impact on the European tourist industry.

China to be top world destination
China will be the world’s most popular tourist destination by 2017. China is currently the fourth most popular destination in the world, with 41.76 million visiting tourists last year, but this figure is set to increase by more than 300% by 2017. The World Trade Organisation predicted that China would receive 137 million tourists by 2020, but this figure is likely to be achieved years ahead of schedule due to the current tourism boom. Increasing numbers of Chinese tourists are travelling overseas, making China the single largest source of tourists in Asia.

Orient report a rise in profits
Orient Express Hotels have recorded a rise in profits, despite a difficult trading period over the last quarter. The company, which operates 49 deluxe restaurant, tourist train, and river cruise properties across the world, announced profits of $19.5m on revenue of $132.4m for the quarter – an increase of 70% on the previous year. For the nine months to 30 September, earnings were $36.4m on revenue of £345.2m up 84 % on the same period in 2004. The hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico had an impact on two of Orient Express’s properties. The Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans suffered water damage and glass breakages, while The Maroma Resort and Spa in Mexico is expected to re-open in January. James B Sherwood, chairman of Orient Express Hotels, said that the company remained resilient in the face of the natural disasters. “While these hurricanes are a challenge, we feel confident that both properties will quickly recover,” he said.
