Video and DVD rental company Blockbuster and fast food chain McDonald’s are launching a joint promotion this week. From 30 November until 3 January McDonald’s customers will receive a Blockbuster rental offer when purchasing a Big Mac or McChicken Premiere sandwich. The offers, which will be valid until 31 January, include 100,000 free rental prizes and “rent one get one free” vouchers. In addition, each McDonald’s box will feature a code entitling customers to a one-month free trial of Blockbuster’s online rental service blockbuster.co.uk. Article continues below
The promotion will be advertised on-pack and through point of sale material in McDonald’s restaurants across the UK. McDonald’s will also be running a nationwide TV advertising campaign by Leo Burnett to support the initiative. Blockbuster UK sales promotion and partnership marketing manager Paul Greenwood said: “This is a great promotion for Blockbuster, allowing us to work with a company with real brand synergy.” Blockbuster last week launched a sales promotion offering customers the chance to get a free DVD player when purchasing ten rentals in advance. The promotions are an attempt to reinforce the Blockbuster brand and hold on to existing customers as the group comes under attack from competitors such as online DVD rental firm Love Film.
