One of Britain’s oldest inns, the Oxenham Arms hotel in Devon, is seeking a new owner.

The Oxenham Arms hotel in South Zeal, Okehampton, dates back to the late 12th century but its historical credentials stretch back even further – the back bar houses a prehistoric stone monolith believed to be 5,000 years old.

The property is set within 3.5 acres of land on the northern fringes of Dartmoor National Park.

It was originally built by lay monks and later became the Dower House of the Burgoyne family, whose heiress brought it to the Oxenham family which gave the building its current name.

The inn was first licensed in 1477 and is said to have catered for Lord Nelson and Charles Dickens.

It has eight letting bedrooms, a 30-seat restaurant, a main bar with an open fireplace and seating for 20 people, a 10-seat back bar complete with stone monolith, and a residents lounge with its own open granite fireplace.

The site also has an enclosed courtyard, a beer garden, and a three-bedroom bungalow to accommodate the owners.

The Exeter office of Christie + Co is seeking £1.25m for the property on behalf of current owners Paul and Janet Lucas.
