Danger from e-mail blasts

(09 February 2006 00:00)

Almost the entire hotel industry needs to learn two key things about e-mail blasts.

First, very few have an unsubscribe button compared with any other industry from which I receive blind, promotional e-mail shots.

Second, hotels often seem oblivious to the damage they cause by sending an e-blast like this. Last week a hotel chain sent an e-mail to 300 travel and hotel-booking agents, and caused a lot of angst as a viral infection caused a number of these to receive more than 15,000 e-mails.

The hotel could have simply used a cheap piece of software that allows e-mail blasts to be sent "separately", which looks much better to the recipient as well.
