Fairmont Hotels and Resorts wins responsible tourism award
Canadian hotel group, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts was recognised for its contribution to responsible tourism at the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards in Washington this week.
At the sixth World Travel and Tourism Global Summit, Fairmont was awarded the Global Tourism Business Award for its environmental best practices and cultural heritage preservation through its Fairmont Green Partnership Programme.
The scheme focuses on improvements in waste management, energy and water conservation as well as community outreach programmes. It also encompasses everything from recycling and organic waste diversion to energy efficient lighting and guest education programmes.
The awards, which recognise and promote best practice within worldwide tourism development, also named the Sierra Gorda in Mexico as winner of the Destination Award. The resort has also been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
Campi ya Kanzi in Kenya took the Conservation Award, while Hotel Punta Islit in Costa Rica was awarded the Investor in People Award.
Jean-Claude Baumgarten, president of the World Travel and Tourism Council said: "Travel and tourism have a huge economic and social potential. More and more there are examples from all over the world where this potential is being realised and the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards highlight the very best of these."
