Roast replaces curry as the nation's favourite nosh

Britain's love affair with curry has cooled off as the nation's consumers develop a new warmth for more traditional native fare.

A survey commissioned by the Red Tractor food assurance scheme found the traditional British roast was the favourite meal for 38% of a sample of nearly 1,600 people across the country.

The Sunday roast was three times more popular than its nearest rival, steak and chips.

"For a long time curry has been documented as the UK's favourite food but, amazingly, Thai curry rated only fifth in this latest poll and Indian curries were relegated to number eight," said Beverly Wilson, head of marketing at Red Tractor.

Britain's top 10 dishes

1. Traditional roast dinner
2. Steak and chips
3. Fish and chips
4. Lasagne
5. Green Thai curry
6. Spaghetti Bolognese
7. Shepherd's/Cottage pie

9. Sweet and sour pork
10. Bangers and mash
