Hecks Kingston Black cider and Seidr Dai perry have won their respective categories in the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Cider and Perry Championships 2006.

Hecks Kingston Black, brewed by Hecks Farmhouse Cider, Somerset, uses Kingston Black apples grown locally in orchards, and the family brewers have been in business since 1840.

Seidr Dai, which has been produced for the past six years in Wales, uses a pear called Hellens Early, also grown in local orchards.

The champions beat more than 120 ciders and perries to their titles at the Reading Beer and Cider festival held over the May Day bank holiday.

Gillian Williams, Camra’s director of cider and perry campaigning, said: “Commercial ciders are enjoying something of a boon at the moment thanks to lavish advertising, but it should not be forgotten that exceptionally high quality real cider is still being made all over the UK.”
