Investing in the future

(04 May 2006 00:00)

Many congratulations to the winners of the 2006 Acorns. It shows that the hospitality profession produces some of the best talent that this country has. Why? Because of the ability to reward and allow people to grow more freely than most other sectors. Creativity, passion, skills and positive attitudes are encouraged. It doesn't matter what your background is, you can make your name in this industry if you apply yourself.

However, we need to invest more in finding this talent. At Springboard Charitable Trust we're dedicated to raising the profile of careers and opportunities to millions of potential recruits every year. Just look at FutureChef this year, with more than 5,500 competitors aged 12-16 producing dishes that amaze top industry chefs.

About 60 companies within hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism already invest in the future of our industry, through the Business Partnership Scheme. This helps to demonstrate corporate social responsibility, but more importantly provides access to pools of potential recruits.

The industry needs to invest in its future and attract more people like the Acorn winners - or we'll be in a much weaker position in the future.
