UK Hospitality workers are the most likely to underperform in the workplace due to the effects of alcohol, according to a new report.

Alcohol in the Workplace by insurer Royal & SunAlliance found that along with employees in the manufacturing sector, hotel and catering staff were most likely to be nursing a hangover the next day at work.

The research suggests the hospitality industry’s reputation as a “work hard, play hard” industry is alive and (un)well.

Royal Sun & Alliance predicts 2.9 million people are planning to leave work early to watch a match during the World Cup tournament, with 1.4 million workers set to leave work to watch a game before returning.

However, this could be risky, with the insurer claiming as many as a quarter of all workplace accidents can be attributed to alcohol, with one in six employees “under the influence” while at work.
