The Bell at Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, has been named Michelin Pub of the Year 2007.

A former 17th century Welsh coaching inn with eight bedrooms, it overlooks the Monnow River and one of the Marches’ castles, Skenfrith.

Michelin guide editor Derek Bulmer said of the winner: “As well as excellent cuisine, the Bell offers a combination of ambience, friendly service, a good choice of beers, an excellent wine list, sumptuous bedrooms and that certain something that makes it special for visitors and locals alike.”

Bulmer said the gastropub phenomenon showed no sign of stopping, particularly in the South-east.

But he also warned against the trend for many establishments to hike up prices, becoming restaurants in pub shells, rather than the affordable, good quality, informal dining spaces as originally intended by the movement.

The 2007 edition of Michelin’s Eating Out in Pubs Guide is launched today (6 September) priced £14.99.
