BHA is happy to welcome all skilled workers from the EU

Could I clarify the British Hospitality Association's position on the employment of immigrant labour in the hospitality industry (Caterer, 24 August, page 6)?

The BHA is not in favour of a ban on skilled labour from Bulgaria or Romania, but we do see merit in the Government's expected decision to delay the introduction of an "open door" policy for these countries when they become members of the EU next January. We need to ensure that the influx of workers from Eastern European countries in the past two years is satisfactorily absorbed.

We have jobs available that need to be filled and providing immigrant workers from any country comply with current Home Office regulations, are skilled and can speak English, they will be as welcome today as the many
thousands of other skilled workers have been in the past.

Chief Executive, British Hospitality Association
