John Young, chairman of Young's, dies at 85

John Young CBE, chairman of London brewery and pub operator Young & Co, has died at the age of 85 after a long battle with cancer.

Young, who died last night (17 September), was the oldest and longest-serving chairman in the British brewing industry, having been at the south London brewery for 44 years.

He was the great grandson of Charles Allen Young, one of two businessmen who in 1831 took over the 16th-centruy Ram Brewery.

It comes in the week that Young's is to end brewing in Wandsworth to relocate its activities to a new joint project site with brewer Charles Wells at the Eagle Brewery in Bedford.

Young's chief executive, Stephen Goodyear, said: "He was both a great leader and a marvellous character who was a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him."
