School bans pupil from dining hall over contents of packed lunch
A boy aged 10 has been banned from his school dining hall because his packed lunch broke the Government's healthy eating guidelines. The boy was forced to eat in the headmaster's office at Lunsford primary school, Larkfield, Kent, because his lunch contained two snacks, instead of one. - Daily Telegraph, 14 October.
Dinner ladies to fight for wage equality with male council workers
Fifty dinner ladies working for Birmingham city council on a basic salary of £9,500 a year have brought a legal claim for compensation and equal pay against their employer after learning that their male counterparts doing road maintenance could earn up to £53,000 through a complex system of overtime and bonuses. - The Times, 14 October.
McDonald's profits rise through salads and sandwiches in Europe
McDonald's has reported better-than-expected profits for the third quarter of this yeart on the back of a sales jump in Europe, where it is pushing its sandwiches and salads. As a result, European quarter-on-quarter profits grew at nearly twice the rate of those in the United States. - The Times, 14 October

200-bed hotel planned for former London brewery site A new hotel is to be built on part of the site of London's historic banqueting venue The Brewery. A £55m 200-room hotel scheme was announced yesterday by EC&O Venues, which bought the site from Whitbread last year. - The Times, 14 October

Chefs moving more into cooking science The latest invention being taken up by British chefs is the Gastrovac, designed by Spanish chef Sergio Torres. The food to be cooked is placed in the machine and the air sucked out, enabling cooking to occur at far lower temperatures than usual and retaining more flavour. - Sunday Times, 15 October
Choice to open first hotel in ScotlandChoice Hotels is investing £6m in a Sleep Inn hotel at Braehead, Renfrewshire, in what will be its first outlet in Scotland. Dublin restaurants flout beef origin labelling law
Many of Dublin's restaurants are flouting a regulation that requires them to display the country of origin of their beef.
