A university vice-chancellor has written to all clubs and bars near the campus, calling on landlords not to offer his students cut-price drinks.

Professor Tony Downes, from Reading University, has sent letters to all the clubs and bars in the local area, suggesting that bar staff think twice before encouraging drinking among students through discounts and promotions.

In his letter, Downes wrote: “We strive very hard to ensure student safety and good community relations. We want to foster responsible attitudes towards drink in our students — this is especially the case for our newly arrived fresher students. 

“There is a drinking culture out there which we don’t want our students to think is the only activity.”

A spokesman for Reading University said that the action followed a series of incidents where students had been drunk in and around the University's three campuses, causing disturbances and anti-social behaviour.
