Scotland's Inverlochy Castle voted best hotel in Europe
Scotland's Inverlochy Castle at Fort William has been voted the best hotel in Europe by readers of US-based Travel + Leisure magazine.
In the magazine's 11th World's Best Awards, Von Essen's Buckland Manor Country hotel in Gloucestershire was voted ninth best in Europe.
It is the first time in the awards' history that a UK property has beaten French and Italian hotels to the top spot.
London's Goring and Lanesborough hotels also made the top 50, at 38 and 50, respectively.
Four Seasons hotel Canary Wharf in London was voted best business hotel in Europe and the fifth best in the world.
Singita Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa was voted the best hotel in the world, having debuted at number one in the 2004 list before slipping into second place next year.
Travel + Leisure is published monthly and has a circulation of around one million.
