Italian Government drops bed tax proposals

The Italian Government has today ditched controversial plans for a bed tax.

A spokesperson for the Tourist Office confirmed the proposals for an accommodation tax had been shelved.

"There will be no additional national or local taxes for tourists visiting Italy," they said.

Unlike the proposals being considered in the UK as part of the Lyons Inquiry into local government funding, revenues from the Italian bed tax would have been reinvested in the tourism industry.

Rome, Florence and Venice were set to be early adopters of the tax.
