Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has announced a new partnership with the World Heritage Alliance, to promote conservation, sustainable tourism and economic development for communities near World Heritage sites.

Leading the move will be the Fairmont Mayakoba, an ecologically diverse resort on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula which has been paired with the nearby World Heritage site the Sian Ka’an biosphere Reserve, which has 1.3 million acres of tropical ecosystems and is home to 23 different archaeological sites of pre-Columbian Mayan culture.

Ian Robinson, general manager of the Fairmont Mayakoba, said: “The Mayan people have lived in the areas surrounding the Reserve for centuries and have a fascinating cultural heritage. By working with these communities we can offer our guests a unique and sustainable travel experience.

The scheme is the latest in Fairmont’s Green partnership programme which aims to strengthen the company’s commitment to the environment. The World Heritage Alliance is a joint initiative by the United Nations Foundation and Expedia Inc.
