London's Savoy teams up with glass recycler

London's Savoy hotel has teamed up with glass recycler Berryman in a project designed to save more than 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Under the scheme, operated in conjunction with the London Borough of Hackney, glass is taken from the hotel by the council and delivered to Berryman's depot in Dagenham. There it is recycled and used to produce new bottles and jars.

Savoy hotel green team chairman Debra Patterson said the project was part of the hotel's ongoing efforts to maximise its environmental friendliness and that it hoped to help Berryman save 118 tonnes of carbon dioxide through the programme in the next year.

"Hackney is one of the few councils in London that offers a recycling service where waste glass is turned into new bottles and jars rather than being used for road aggregate," she said.

"We therefore decided that this would be the ideal way for us to recycle our glass and approached the council about the project, which complements the increasing programme of environmental projects the Savoy's green team has developed over the past year."
