Kitchen nightmare for Gordon Ramsay in New York

Gordon Ramsay's New York restaurant has come under fire from neighbouring residents, who have launched an official campaign against the eaterie alleging health and building code violations.

The campaign represents another challenge for Ramsay's first US operation, which opened on 16 November. It comes less than a month after staff reportedly threatened to walk out in a row over tips.

Residents of 150 West 55th Street, which is adjacent to the London Hotel and Gordon Ramsay at the London, have held a meeting with NYC councillor Daniel Garodnick complaining about "endless aggravation" caused by the establishment.

Violations cited include the blocking of pavements, noise disturbances by air conditioning and exhaust fans, unhealthy air quality, damage to pavement tree boxes, and blockage of public walkway space.

Elizabeth Hulings, spokeswoman for the residents, said they had been "affected dramatically".

"Two of our shareholders have had to seek medical attention for respiratory problems caused by particulate matter from the garbage truck and the new exhaust fan and air conditioning unit drone incessantly at jet engine levels," she told Caterer. "We cannot sleep or work."

A spokesman for Gordon Ramsay Holdings said: "Such challenges are not uncommon during a major construction project such as undertaken at the hotel and restaurant and when brought to the attention of Gordon Ramsay Holdings by the hotel, the complaint was immediately addressed.

"Gordon Ramsay has been warmly welcomed by the neighbourhood and is committed to ensuring their comfort and appreciates their patience while he works to resolve the issue."

However, according to residents, problems have continued despite complaints to hotel and restaurant management and owners. "The bottom line is that we still need help, because none of our efforts has brought the desired results," said resident Elena Volkova.

The issues will be thrashed out at a meeting organised by councillor Garodnick between the residents and representatives of the London Hotel and Ramsay's restaurant on 19 December.
