Manchester City Council launches green guide for hotels

Manchester City Council has produced a green guide for hotels, event organisers and venues to help them limit the environmental impact of events held in the area.

The ‘Greening Your Event' guide gives information on how to go above and beyond simply complying with environmental regulations when planning and conducting events.

It covers key areas for a sustainable event including picking the most appropriate conference location, and looking at sustainable transport options.

It also gives advice on dealing with waste management and using sustainable foods ensuring that it's locally sourced and fairly traded.

In addition, the guide includes pointers on how to ensure that printed materials have as little environmental impact as possible and also there are ideas on how to manage carbon emissions in the most sustainable way.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "We are aware that there is a considerable environmental impact associated with the conference and event industry, which is why we want to support this sector in becoming more sustainable and this guide, gives practical advice and steps on how to do that.

Richard Morrell, general manager of the Palace Hotel, welcomed publication of the guide.

"We rigorously promote energy conversation, with targets for savings across the hotel; we encourage the use of tap rather than bottled water and encourage our guests to use public transport," he said.

"The Greening Your Event Guide can assist both the hotel and our event organisers to reduce our environmental impact. We will be pleased to offer a copy of the Guide to anyone who holds an event at the hotel".
