Caterer loves… Boutique cinemas

We've all been there: sitting in that big multiplex cinema with giggling teenagers throwing popcorn from the back row, a smelly person with an annoying cough beside you, and then, seconds before the movie starts, the tallest man in the world with bouffant hair sits right in front of you, blocking the screen.

Of course, by this time you might also be feeling sick from the amount of popcorn, sweets, hotdogs, nachos and other junk food you've consumed, forcing you to watch the film in an uncomfortable state of E number-induced jitters. Not the best evening out

But a trip to the flicks can be more comfortable and enjoyable. The era of the boutique cinema is booming, and film-goers can now enjoy big, comfy chairs with footrests or leather sofas to sit on and plenty of space between you and that 80s hairdo.

Even the food has been overhauled - olives, antipasti and even full dinners are now the order of the day. Hotels such as London's Firmdale group or the Scotsman in Edinburgh offer special cinema clubs and dinner and movie deals.

So whether you want to watch that newly released action thriller, the latest chick flick, or even an arty little French number, these hidden gems are picture-perfect for whiling away a grey January evening.

Here are a few suggestions:

Electric Cinema, Birmingham

The oldest UK cinema now has luxury sofas, waiter service, a full art deco bar, and posh nibbles ranging from deli treats to handmade ice-cream and afternoon tea.
