Four of the UK's dirtiest hotels owned by Britannia Hotels, says TripAdvisor
Four of the top 10 dirtiest hotels in the UK come from the same hotel group, according to peer review website TripAdvisor.
Britannia Stockport hotel had the dubious honour of being named the worst UK hotel in the survey, while the group's Country House Hotel in Didsbury and Airport hotel in Northenden, Manchester, came in at number nine and 10 respectively.
Some of the TripAdvisor reviews describe the Stockport establishment as "disgusting", "absolutely filthy", "a fleapit", "awful", "a rancid dump", "faulty hotel" and "a hovel". One traveller simply stated "for the love of God stay away!"
Other no-gos were the Nanford Guest House in Oxford (2); the Master Brewer Hotel in Hillingdon, West London (3); Britannia's Europa Gatwick hotel, Crawley (4); Hyde Park West in Pembridge Square, London (5).
On a brighter note, at the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice hotel awards saw Scotland dominate the accolades with The Howard in Edinburgh nominated one of the top 25 world city hotels, and it also came out best for Inns and B&Bs.
In other categories, the Atlantic Hotel in St Brelade, Jersey, was the top placed UK hotel in the World Luxury category.
Other British top 10 successes included the Parkes Hotel and Chesterfield Mayfair both in London in the Best Luxury Europe category; Hotel 41 in London was voted Best for Romance in Europe.
The Clevedon Hotel in Torquay received a double top 10 for Best Bargain, Europe and Best Hidden Gem, Europe.
TripAdvisor European communications manager Ian Rumgay said: "TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice winners are "selected" by the millions of travellers from around the world who provide their real and unbiased reviews or opinions about hotels on tripadvisor.com and across the web.
He added Scotland had dominated the small hostels sector, which considering the worldwide competition was an outstanding achievement.
