Arbutus wins first Michelin star

Michelin launches dedicated London Guide

(24 January 2007 11:19)

Michelin has granted London five additional stars, as the company launches a new dedicated guide to eating out in the capital.

The new Michelin Guide London 2007 has adopted the format introduced on the publisher’s New York City and San Francisco guides.

Michelin said this will provide more detailed comments on each entry contained within as well as images and a full-page entry for star winning establishments. The guide features 428 restaurants and pubs, including 43 starred restaurants and 50 hotels.

It is the first European city guide to make use of the new format.

Among the London restaurants awarded new stars was Gordon Ramsay’s Belgravia eatery Pétrus, which has become the fifth eatery in the capital to hold two Michelin stars. It is the only one of Ramsay’s restaurants to hold two stars under the culinary direction of Marcus Wareing.

Gordon Ramsay’s latest London venture, La Noisette in Knightsbridge, has also been recognised with its first star. Ramsay’s stable of London restaurants now hold 10 stars between them.

The remaining two London stars were awarded to French chef Joël Robuchon’s L’Atelier and Anthony Demetre and Will Smith’s Soho venture Arbutus, which each gained one.

Commenting on winning his first star, Demetre said: “We're absolutely over the moon and with the style of restaurant we're operating, it proves the myth among chefs that you don't need to have the finest napery to get a Michelin star.”
