London’s Savoy hotel has banned smoking from all its public areas.

The ban, which came into effect in early January, pre-empts the official smoking ban which will come into force in England in July, and affects all the hotel’s restaurants, bars and communal areas.

General manager of the Savoy, Kiaran Macdonald said: “The change came about in response to significant feedback from both our guests and colleagues as we are all now much more aware of the health risks surrounding "passive smoking".

"The change has been extremely well received by everyone, including those guests who are smokers."

A spokeswoman for the hotel added that more complaints had been received before the ban about smoke in the bar than in the two weeks since it had been implemented.
