Scottish Councils are to get an extra £5m to teach children about healthy eating, as part of the Scottish Executive’s ongoing efforts to promote school meals.

The money, drawn from the Executive’s existing resources, will complement the aims of the Health Promotion and Nutrition Bill, which was introduced to Parliament last September. The Bill aims to educate staff and pupils about the benefits of staying fit and healthy.

The additional money can be used to buy resources - like books or DVDs - to teach school pupils about healthy eating, as well as directly promoting school meals services.

In November 2005, a report by the country’s school inspectors concluded Scotland’s efforts to improve school meals, started in 2003 under the Hungry for Success banner, had been a success.

Hungry for Success has seen £63.5m injected into the Scottish school meals system over three years, with a further £70m allocated for the three-year period to 2008.
