London hotels make strong start to year

Strong January sales suggest London hotels are on track for another record year, according to the latest HotStats figures from TRI Hospitality Consulting.

"London has consistently been a strong performer over the past three years and it looks set to have a fourth consecutive record year," said TRI managing director Jonathan Langston.

"January is historically one of the weaker months for hotels and it will take until after Easter before there is a clear trend for the year," he added.

Revenue per available room (revpar) soared by 14.8% in the capital during the first month of 2007, rising from £66.10 to £75.88.

Most of the increase stemmed from the 12.8% hike in room rate to £104.09 (up from £92.29 in January 2007). Occupancy nudged ahead by 1.3 points to 72.9%.

Regional hotels continued their steady progress with a 4.8% rise in revpar to £40.66 (from £38.81).

Although occupancy grew by just 0.8 points to 58.6%, room rate rose by 3.3%, from £67.11 to £69.35.
