World Travel & Tourism Council calls for debate on climate change

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched an international campaign to encourage debate on climate change, ahead of its tourism summit next month.

WTTC is running a series of full-page adverts in broadsheets, international magazines and the travel trade press to encourage stakeholders to confront the challenges facing the travel and tourism industry in an increasingly environmentally concerned world.

President of the WTTC Jean-Claude Baumgarten said: "The risk of an energy crisis is forcing a re-think on consumption levels. Already travel and tourism leaders are working on making a real difference, not only on the carbon footprint of their activities, but also the overall impact on our natural environment."

Baumgarten said that rather than demonise any one industry it was now time to work together to cut through misconceptions and work on realising practical solutions for a sustainable future that doesn't stifle tourism growth.

He also revealed the WTTC's 7th Global Travel & Tourism Summit to be held in Lisbon on 11 May will be carbon neutral.
