Plans for new hotel alongside Newcastle FC unveiled

Plans for a new hotel alongside Newcastle United's football ground have been revealed.

The 200-bedroom, four-star building will form part of a massive redevelopment of the former Tyne Brewery site at Gallowgate.

Liverpool-based property developers Downing have submitted a planning application, which also includes offices, shops and a 462-bed "student village".

Downing development director Peter Houghton said: "The scheme will regenerate a key brown-field site, create jobs and act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area."

If approved, it would mean the latest in a long line of hotels opened or being planned for the city.

Plans by Hanro for a 167-room hotel, also near the football ground, have already been approved.

There are plans by Preston-based Trinity Hotels for a 128-room hotel on the Quayside, as well as a 42-room Hotel du Vin development in nearby Ouseburn.

Glasgow-based McKever Group also recently opened a 20-room Aparthotel in Northumberland Street and a 35-room hotel on the Quayside.
