Ryder Cup venue the Belfry to be pulled down and rebuilt
Golf's Ryder Cup venue the Belfry hotel in Warwickshire is set to be razed to the ground under plans to redevelop the site as an exclusive world-class golf resort.
As reported yesterday on Kitchen Rat Belfry owner Quinn has struck a deal with management company De Vere, which will see the latter walk away from the iconic hotel.
Sean Quinn, the Irish property billionaire, bought the site for £186m two years ago and is reputed to have paid £20m to De Vere's new owners Alternative Hotel Group to buy them out of the management contract.
He had previously tried to get De Vere, then under different ownership, evicted for breach of contract but the action was thrown out of court.
According to a report today in The Times, Quinn plans to bulldoze the hotel and build a 500-room complex to "develop a world class hotel and leisure complex".
The cost of such a move, which is subject to planning permission, is reported as £150m to £200m.
