Leaflets promoting a Glasgow pub crawl around the city’s cheapest bars with drinks from £1 have been withdrawn after criticism.

According to reports in today’s Glasgow Herald the flyers were displayed in Glasgow City Council and city museum racks despite officials’ stance against the promotion of cheap booze.

The promotion was run by Glasgow’s Best Bar Crawl and the company owner, James Moore told the paper it was “entirely responsible” as drinkers who moved between bars were consuming less alcohol than those staying in a single location.

However, a spokesman for Glasgow City Council would only tell the paper: “We have instructed the company who supply and fill the leaflet stands to remove the leaflets in question.”

The current crackdown comes after the introduction of new responsible drinking guidelines in Scotland that call for a ban on promotional activity that can lead to binge drinking, including buy-one-get-one-free offers and happy hours.
