City Inn named fastest growing hospitality business by profit

Hotel group City Inn is the highest placed hospitality business of three in the top 100 list of Britain's fastest growing businesses by profit.

The Sunday Times Profit Track 100 placed Scottish hoteliers Donald McDonald, David and Sandy Orr's hotel company, City Inn, third.

The company has seen its profits grow 111% a year from £681,000 in 2003 to £6.4m in 2006.

The group which has its flagship hotel in Westminster and sister properties in Bristol, Birmingham and Glasgow, is due to open a property in Manchester next month.

Other hotels in Europe and the USA, including a £99m new flagship development in Amsterdam, are already in the pipeline.

Coffee chain operator Caffè Nero was the only other company in the sector to make the list coming in at 18, having seen profits grow by 77% a year from £1.6m in 2003 to £9.1m in 2006.

Contract caterer Baxter Storey was in 84th place, having slipped from 62nd in 2006. The group saw profits climb 49% from £1.8m in 2002 to £5.9m in 2005.
