Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) has launched a carbon offsetting programme for guests staying at the marketing consortium’s member hotels.

Under the ‘Leading Green’ scheme, LHW will offset guests’ energy consumption for stays at any of its 440 hotel members with a 50¢ (25p) per night payment if the booking is made through www.lhwgreen.com or when Leading Green is mentioned during a phone booking.

The payment per guest represents 29.3 kilowatt-hours of electricity supplied by wind or solar power, which equates to 33.7lbs of greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Brain Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International, which is advising the company and partnering on the scheme, said: “We are very excited to be partnering with the Leading Hotels of the World to educate their guests and hotels to reduce their environmental footprint by the efficient use of energy and minimisation of waste.”
