Acorn House to open new restaurant

(31 May 2007 10:32)

Acorn House, London's first environmentally sustainable training restaurant, is to open a second site, Caterer can reveal.

The second restaurant, which is scheduled to open in October, will be located in Hackney, east London. Like Acorn House, it will be environmentally aware or sustainable in all aspects of its trade and will also include a restaurant training facility.

"The new site will be run much the same way as Acorn House but will be even more environmentally friendly," said executive chef Arthur Potts Dawson.

Acorn House, which opened in November last year, is a joint initiative between the Shoreditch Trust, the Terrence Higgins Trust and Bliss Restaurant Consultancy.

It uses recycled and organic materials, purifies its water on site and recycles all its kitchen waste. Its menu reflects the capital's cultural diversity and is focused on seasonal, locally sourced and sustainable produce.

Acorn House recently launched a campaign to attract backers to fund its restaurant training facility and hopes to raise £200,000 to pay for its training programme, which is designed to educate 10 students as eco-friendly restaurateurs.
