Chef fertility protection from CoolBerries

Radiated and conducted heat in the commercial kitchen is a known threat to chefs' sperm counts and sperm quality - infertility among chefs is twice the UK average - and can lead to testicular cancer. However, help is at hand from CoolBerries, which has updated its CaterShield Professional range to conform to the EN531:1995 standard for protection against heat and flame.

These lightweight pads, measuring 280mm x 225mm x 24mm, pop into the front pocket of a chef's apron, along with a reusable ice pack, to keep the testes cool. They will protect up to 343°C and are also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and flame-retardant.

They are made up of a double layer of reflective aluminium laminate bonded to a flexible Kevlar/Aramid weave fabric at the front, along with a waterproof fabric that sandwiches an ultra-thin high-performance insulation material.

The basic CaterShield Professional pack (with two ice packs) is priced at £39.14. There is also a £42.55 Starter Pack (with four ice packs and a square apron), a £48.23 Pro Pack (four ice packs and two square aprons) and a £51 Custom Pack (as above, with the added options of style and colour of apron). Ice packs cost 95p each.
