Travelodge plans £5m hotel in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter

Budget hotel chain Travelodge has unveiled plans to open a £5m hotel in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The 100-room property, which will be located at Newhall Square, forms part of the regeneration of Birmingham’s former Science Museum.

It marks the first letting at the at the £65m mixed-use development, which will also include cafés and bars, apartments, offices and galleries.

Travelodge development director Tony O’Brien said: “As part of our aggressive growth plan we aim to open 3,000 rooms in 2007 and a further 3,000 per year until 2010.”

“Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Travelodge will play an important role in ensuring we achieve this goal as well as complement our other 11 hotels in the city.”

Construction work at the 2.3 acre site will start later this year and the hotel will be ready for occupation by autumn 2008.

Travelodge recently announced the acquisition of the former Greens hotel in central Edinburgh.

The company said it is investing £1.7m in refurbishing the 55-room property, which will open as a 72-bed Travelodge in November.
