Overseas travel and tourism - Industry data (09 October 2008 15:25)
The amount spent by overseas visitors to the UK fell by 2.2% during July 2008 to £1.78b, compared with £1.82b during the same month of 2007, according to the Government’s latest Overseas Travel and Tourism figures.
The number of overseas visits to the UK dropped by 0.9% to 3,320,000 during this period, compared with 3,350,000 in July 2007.
Visits from North America dropped by 17.4%, while trips from Europe and the rest of the world increased by 3.2% and 2.7% respectively.Overseas Travel and Tourism figures are published each month and quarter by the government’s National Statistics Office.
They are based on the International Passenger Survey, a random sample of more than 250,000 interviews carried out each year with passengers entering or leaving the UK through the main airports, seaports and the Channel Tunnel. These interviews represent one in every 500 passengers.
