Teenager awarded for saving sleeping guests from fire

(25 August 2007 07:00)

A teenager who ran through a blazing hotel in the Isle of Man waking up the sleeping guests and saved 13 lives has been recognised for his courage.

Steffan Hoy, 16, has been awarded a Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Parchment for risking his own life to save the 13 elderly guests at the Adelphi Hotel, Douglas, at 2am on 21 July 2006.

In addition to the award, Hoy won the personal praise of the Humane Society spokesman as he announced the awards at the Society’s headquarters in London.

“Thanks in large part to Steffan’s actions, all 13 elderly guests got out of this blazing hotel safely,” the spokesman said.

“He ran through the hotel as smoke and flames spread all around, waking all the sleeping guests and evacuating the hotel. He put himself at considerable risk, and thoroughly deserves this award for his selfless courage.”
