Yum! remained the largest operator of quick-service restaurants in 2006-2007 with 1,377 KFC and Pizza Hut outlets, closely followed by McDonald's with 1,247 venues.

The biggest growth was achieved by Subway, which added 314 new outlets to total 879 venues and climb from fifth to third position.

The other key growers were Domino's Pizza (which added 90 outlets to reach 470) and Prêt à Manger, whose 33 new stores helped it rise from tenth to seventh position in the table.

The O'Brien's estate more than halved in number, plunging it from ninth to fifteenth position, while SSP gained a new owner and the Millies Cookies brand.

Drop-outs from last year included Haagen Dazs owner General Mills and Benjy's, which went into administration, while Cooplands and Peter's were new entrants to the league.
